Do I need a Bali visa?
YES! As mentioned above, you will 100% need a visa to visit Bali or any other part of Indonesia. Depending on the length of time you wish to stay will be the primary factor in making your decision.
Most travelers will need one of two visas, which we describe in the following sections….
Indonesia Visa on Arrival (VOA)
The Indonesia Visa on Arrival is basically an Indonesia tourist visa.
As the name implies, you simply arrive to Bali (or other major entry points) and get your visa. Currently there are 75 countries whose citizens are eligible for a VOA. Check out the full list here.
The VOA is valid for 30 days and can be extended one time for a total stay of 60 days in Bali.
Whether or not you use an agent, you must go in person to the Immigration office for the extension. Often people will opt for the B211A visa for this reason alone, as the waiting times at the Immigration office can be unpredictable. You might not want to waste even half of a day of your holiday on this, and that’s assuming you go on a ‘quieter’ day.
While there are a few countries that are eligible for a free VOA Bali visa, most of us will have to pay for it.
Visa on Arrival Bali Cost 2022
The current cost for a visa on arrival is US$35 per person, also payable in Indonesian rupiah in the amount of Rp. 500,000. Prepare the exact amount you need if paying in USD, as they will give your change in rupiah and the exchange rate isn’t as high as at the money changer (this is the only money changer we use).
B211A Visa
The B211A visa is valid for 60 days and can be extended 2 times at 60 days per extension. The maximum total stay for the B211A visa is 180 days. You do not have to leave Indonesia during this time.
The B211A visa replaced some visas that you may have heard of in the past, including the Social Visa and Business Visa. The newer B211A visa can be used for Tourism, Volunteering, Studying Abroad, and Business.
Business does not mean working. Rightfully so, this can be confusing.
Business, or conducting business means meetings with potential clients and partners, sourcing materials or goods for export, or checking potential investments. You are NOT PERMITTED to earn money while in Indonesia with this Bali visa.
You will be required to visit the Immigration office for your extensions, meaning two visits should you choose to stay for the entire 180 day maximum.
As of August 2022, the B211A visa can be processed both on- and off-shore. Meaning if you are already in Bali and your B221A visa is nearing the end, you can apply for the new one without leaving the country.

Can I work in Bali?
NO! Not without the correct visa and sponsorship. Neither the Visa on Arrive nor the B211A allow you to work legally in Indonesia.
Many digital nomads and freelancers come to Bali and think “Hey, I can try and get some graphic design work while I’m staying in Bali for 3 months!” This is simply not true and you put yourself at risk for deportation.
Working remotely is a whole other story. The government has long been entertaining the possibility of a Digital Nomad Visa, but until now it’s just speculative.
